Current Affairs-17/9/2015

  1. Evidently , the name Ahmed Mohamed was arresting enough to warrant police detention even though he is a high-school teenager who so obviously geeky.
In what appears to be a case of xenophobic overreach that has appalled most people who heard the news, a 14-year Muslim boy was arrested by the Texas police after he brought a home-made digital clock to Dallas-area school as part of an engineering project.
  2.  China's economic powerhouse is slowing, destabilizing global markets. Beijing's neighbors, unnerved over its pursuit of territorial claims, are increasingly cozying up to Washington. A threat of U.S. cyber sanctions looms over Chinese companies.
  3. Forty-three candidates cleared by the BJP leadership for Bihar polls on Wednesday represent 17 different castes. If this challenges those who believe that the BJP is banking on upper caste polarization alone or, by implication, that the state is headed for an old-style "backward-forward" caste contest, there might be more to come. Sources in the party said by the time the BJP clears its last list for the 160 seats it plans to contest, the saffron slate will have a dozen more castes represented on it.
  4. Saudi Arabia on Wednesday withdrew its diplomat, accused of raping his Nepali maids, after it refused to waive his diplomatic immunity.
In a terse statement on Wednesday night, the MEA spokesperson said "We learn that Saudi embassy first secretary, Majed Hassan Ashoor, who is allegedly accused of abusing 2 Nepali maids, has left India. The first secretary being a diplomat is governed by the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations".
  5. With the formal launch of the Pattiseema lift irrigation scheme in Andhra Pradesh, India on Wednesday took a step forward in its ambitious but long-pending goal to interlink major rivers to form a national water grid. The Pattiseema project lifts flood water from the river Godavari and pumps it into the Polavaram right canal that empties into the river Krishna in Vijayawada.
