1.   Ace India shuttler Saina Nehwal defeated local favourite Lindaweni Fanetri in 21-17, 21-17 in the last-four to reach her maiden final of the Badminton World Championships in Jakarta on Saturday.With her triumph on Saturday, the Olympics bronze medallist became the first Indian ever to make it to the final of the world championships.

2.   Abhishek Verma gave India a perfect Independence Day gift by clinching the gold medal in the compound men's individual section to open their account in the Archery World Cup Stage 3 on Saturday. Having failed as a team in the bronze play-off earlier in the day, the world number 18 was at his best in the individual final as he held on to his lead to wrap up the issue 148-145 against Esmaeil Ebadi of Iran. 

3.  Top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis eased into the semifinals of the WTA Rogers Cup, following a straight-set win over Taipei pair of Hao-Ching Chan and Yung-Jan Chan. The Indo-Swiss team beat the unseeded rivals 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the $2,513,000 Premier hard court tournament. 

4.    Australia's Matt Jones completed a bogey-free seven-under-par 65 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead on 11-under 133 as the second round concluded at the 97th PGA Championship.

5.  Never before had a target in excess of 100 been chased successfully in the fourth innings at Galle International Stadium. Rangana Herath, sealed a remarkable victory over India by 63 runs on the fourth afternoon.
